2 Men Charged In Fatal South Jersey Shooting: Prosecutor

Jose Vargas, 20, and Nelson Mescual, 26, both from Camden, were charged in the death of Julio Sanchez-Moncada, 32, of Camden.

Two people have been charged in the fatal shooting of a 32-year-old Camden man, Camden County Prosecutor Mary Eva Colalillo and Camden County Police Chief Scott Thomson announced on Wednesday.

Jose Vargas, 20, and Nelson Mescual, 26, both from Camden, were charged with first-degree murder in the Feb. 15 fatal shooting of Julio Sanchez-Moncada, authorities announced. They were also charged with unlawful possession of a weapon and possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose.

Vargas was arrested without incident in Camden on Tuesday by the United States Marshals Task Force, authorities said.

He was remanded to the Camden County Correctional Facility pending a pretrial detention hearing. Under Criminal Justice Reform rules, the court may order he be detained or released with conditions.

Mescula was already being held in the Camden County Correctional Facility, according to authorities.

Camden County Police found Sanchez-Moncada suffering from multiple gunshot wounds while responding to a ShotSpotter activation near the 3100 block of Westfield Avenue in Camden at about 10:42 a.m. on Friday, Feb. 15. He was pronounced deceased at the scene at about 11:02 a.m.
