Months-Long Water Main Replacement Begins In Voorhees

New Jersey American Water said crews began a four-month project on Nov. 28 to replace aging water mains around Voorhees.

VOORHEES, NJ — Expect traffic changes around Voorhees for the next several months, as New Jersey American Water crews begin replacing aging water mains.

The utility supplier said crews began working on Monday, Nov. 28 and will be working throughout the township for about four months. NJ American Water is upgrading six-inch cast-iron water main lines that have been in use since the 1950s, and replacing them with new eight-inch ductile iron main, the utility said.

Pioneer Pipe Contractors is the contractor on the job. Crews will work from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday, according to New Jersey American Water.

"Work outside of these hours is not expected unless required to maintain project schedule," the water utility said. "Final street restorations will be completed in spring of 2023."

  • Ford Avenue from Salem Avenue to the end of the road
  • Hudson Avenue entire length
  • Lennox Avenue entire length
  • Mercer Avenue from Middlesex Avenue to Haddonfield-Berlin Road
  • Middlesex Avenue from Mercer Avenue to Somerset Avenue
  • Somerset Avenue from Ford Avenue to Haddonfield-Berlin Road
  • Sussex Avenue from Lennox Avenue to Somerdale Road
  • Warren Avenue from Lennox Avenue to Somerdale Road

The project also includes replacing 11 fire hydrants and 11 utility-owned service lines along the pipeline route.

"Additionally, New Jersey American Water will replace any customer-owned service line that has been identified as lead or galvanized as part of a statewide initiative to remove all lead and galvanized service lines by 2031," the utility said. "This $2 million investment will continue to advance water service reliability and increase water flows for household consumption and fire protection in this community. This improvement is part of New Jersey American Water’s multimillion-dollar initiative to accelerate the renewal of water infrastructure that has reached the end of its useful life in more than 100 communities across the state."
