'Good Neighbors' Support Heights Food Pantry

Bill O'Shea's Florist collected items for the local food pantry while giving out free roses to be shared throughout the community

Many people in the community know what it takes to be a “good neighbor” therefore many turned out to support the food drive for the Hasbrouck Heights food pantry which Bill O’Shea’s Florist hosted Thursday in recognition of “Good Neighbor Day.”

By late Thursday afternoon the shop already took in more than 50 bags of donated items. Owner John Kosakowski said many people came early in the morning to drop off bags of groceries while on their way to work and they had received many calls from people letting them know they had donations to bring in later in the day. Kosakowski expected more donations to come in before closing.

Another component of the day is to help spread a “good neighborly feeling” by giving out free dozens of roses to people encouraging them to share the roses with friends and neighbors. John Kosakowski, shop owner, said he  sent roses over the borough elementary schools, the municipal offices, library and Board of Education offices.

“There is just so much poverty out there,” said Heights resident Jenia Kazanjian who came in to the shop with a bag of groceries. She shared that she always supports local food drives.

Around Thanksgiving the shop will begin its Buy a Ribbon, Feed the Hungry program which supports the Center for Food Action which is based in Englewood.
