Sports Wrap: Lady Aviators Girls Soccer Claims Another Crown

HH boys soccer drops tough one to Panthers

Make it a perfect 10 for the Hasbrouck Heights girls soccer team.

The Lady Aviators clinched their 10th straight league title. For 10 seasons Hasbrouck Heights girls soccer team has either won outright or shared a league title.

The Lady Aviators clinched outright the North Jersey Interscholastic Conference Meadowlands B divisional title on Thursday night with a 2-0 victory over Weehawken at Depken Field. Last season Heights shared the division title with Saddle Brook and before that they collected Bergen County Scholastic League National division titles.

In addition, the Aviators raised their record to 13-1 on the season.

"Oh yeah, they want to keep it going," said Hasbrouck Heights head coach Joe Mastropietro.

And it was only appropriate that it was on Senior Night as the team honored its seniors in Jodee Giarratana, Julie Sheridan, Johnna Trotter, Jordyn Anderson, Jenny White, Kiersten Larson, Emily Batcho and Pauline Paulino.

Giarratana knows that whenever they take on other teams in the league that the target is on their back. "You definitely feel it," said Giarratana. "When we go to the other field, they say that Hasbrouck Heights is coming."

Against Weehawken, Giarratana and Angelika Barris scored for the Lady Aviators in the first half. Sheridan and Nicole Wrede combined on the shutout in goal for Heights.

Hasbrouck Heights played another tough game against Wallington, but fell short of upsetting the defending Group 1 champions. The Aviators dropped a 3-2 decision at Wallington in September to start the season.

And again Heights dropped another one-goal game, this time at Heights and it was 2-1 on Thursday afternoon.

The Aviators were down 1-0 for most of the game but got a goal from Dylan Colombo to try to catch up to Wallington, but Heights was never able to get the equalizer. For the Aviators Roland Gamez played well in goal with six saves.

Football

Going into Saturday, Hasbrouck Heights was looking to raise its power points and increase its record to 4-2 on the season with two weeks remaining before the state playoff cutoff.

The Aviators lost a tough one the week before to Becton.

Hasbrouck Heights appeared to be headed for overtime on October 7 after Aviators Darren Iurato hit running back David Im on a four-yard touchdown pass against Becton at Riggin Field. Heights Mike Schroback kicked the point after to tie the game at 14 with 1:52 remaining in the game.

But the Aviators defense could not hold back the Wildcats as Becton running back Frank Feroldi scored from two-yards out with second seconds left to ruin the Heights comeback.

Aviators running back Anthony Seidel scored from two yards out in the first quarter to give Heights a 7-0 early lead.

Girls tennis

Hasbrouck Heights upset bid over top-seeded Pascack Hills never got going. The eight-seeded Lady Aviators lost 5-0 to the powerful Cowgirls on Tuesday in the quarterfinals of the Group 1 North 1 state playoffs in Montvale.

All of the Heights players except for first singles Nina Messery lost in straight sets. Messery took Pascack Hill's Samantha Cheng to three sets but lost 6-1, 4-6, 3-6. Despite the loss and being ousted from the stats, Heights still sported an 11-2 record.
