Property Reassessment Process Will Begin Monday

Police department will have inspectors on file so residents can call and verify

Property owners can expect a letter in the mail Friday informing them of the borough’s reassessment process which is expected to begin Monday.

Originally officials stated the process would begin in July but Mike Kronyak, borough administrator told the council Tuesday that it took a bit longer than expected to get the state to approve the contract letters for the reassessment and the process will now begin next week.

Kronyak stated that the borough will receive a list of all the inspectors of Appraisal Systems, the company hired to conduct the reassessment, including their photographs which the police department will keep on file so they will be aware of who is in town and can verify said person if a resident were to call in with concerns.

Borough officials stated last month that they encourage residents to take safety precautions if they are unsure of anyone who comes to the house asking to inspect. Officials say that majority of the process will be done to the exterior of the homes but there will be some random interior inspections.

Due to a record number of tax appeals and foreclosures, borough officials have decided to conduct a reassessment of properties in order to be sure they are assessed at the proper amounts so as to be fair to everyone.

Once the inspections are complete property owners will need to sign off on the assessments before the end of the year and the new numbers will take effect for the 2012 tax year.
