Snowstorm Damages Estimated at $70,000

Preliminary figures submitted to Bergen County Office of Emergency Management

With the clean-up of tree debris left over from the recent snowstorm expected to continue for about another week, town officials said the preliminary costs of damages could amount to about $70,000.

Borough Administrator Mike Kronyak said the figure is a rough estimate which was submitted to the Bergen County Office of Emergency Management. This estimate includes the cost of DPW and police department overtime, which Kronyak said is roughly $38,000 and an additional $32,000 for the removal of tree debris. Further analysis is still needed for other figures such as operational costs for vehicles.

The preliminary numbers were submitted to the county OEM office, Kronyak said, which then gathers reports from all the municipalities to be sent to FEMA for reimbursement. Kronyak said remaining clean-up is expected to continue throughout next week as DPW is still in the process of collecting debris, but it is possible that it could take longer. Officials have said the DPW will continue to go around the borough until all the tree debris has been removed.

The Oct. 29 snowstorm, which town officials have said caused more damage than the hurricane, took out power lines and trees throughout the borough. Ten roads were shut down initially after the storm due to power lines and huge tree branches dangling into the roadways and about 200 homes were left without power.

As DPW Superintendent Bill Spindler reported previously, and remove trees that had fallen on homes and blocked doorways and driveways.
