While the Montgomery Township Deer Management program takes place on specific public open space properties and Montgomery's program prohibits hunting on Sundays, private property owners may independently allow hunting on their land any day of the week.

"Managing the deer population is important for public health, public safety, and protection of the natural environment," according to the Township.

Montgomery’s Deer Management Program began in 2001 after a Township-wide infrared survey was conducted and found the deer population to be around 88 deer per square mile (10 deer per square mile is considered sustainable).

The Township also notes the public health issues associated with deer including how white-tailed deer serve as hosts to deer ticks, which carry several diseases that can impact humans including Lyme Disease, Babesiosis, and Ehrliciosis.

Over the past 10 years (2010-2020), the State averages about 3,500 cases of Lyme Disease per year, with Montgomery averaging about 40 cases per year over the same timeframe.
