Hillsborough Deer Hunt Approved For 19th Year: See What Locations
The most recent deer hunt, which ran from 2021 to 2022, killed 123 deer, according to the township Wildlife Management Program.
HILLSBOROUGH, NJ — The township's annual deer hunt program has been approved for its 19th year.
The Hillsborough Committee unanimously voted to approve Wildlife Management Plan for the 2022-2023 season at its June 14 meeting.
The plan, which began in 2004, allows for the hunting, shooting, killing and removal of white-tailed deer and other wildlife, as approved by the State of New Jersey, on municipally-owned land for the purpose of reducing and managing the township’s deer and other wildlife population.

Last year, 123 deer were killed including 42 males and 81 females. Of those killed, 22 were killed with firearms and 101 with archery, according to a presentation by the Wildlife Management Committee Bob Matros.
Matros noted the correlation between the declining number of car accidents involving deer and the years the hunt has been ongoing.

"Car accidents keep going down," said Matros.
In 2004, the township reported 333 crashes involving deer.
"See how high they were. We were averaging almost a deer a day," said Matros.
This is in comparison to 2021 when the township reported 74 car crashes involving deer.
Another benefit to the program Matros noted is the donation to the hungry. A total of 25 deer were processed into about 900 pounds of venison and donated to the Hunters Helping the Hungry Food Bank Program.
In the approved plan for 2022-2023 there will be 19 properties, which includes two new properties off Hamilton Road and Montgomery Road, available for permitted hunting. One property off Beekman Lane was removed as it has become a township farm lease.
Additionally, the culling of coyote will again be allowed for the upcoming hunt, which is part of a pilot program designed to reduce the spread of mange and rabies throughout the township.
"It's an unimportant process to make sure we are keeping the population culled to a reasonable level but more importantly do it at a very high safety level," said Committeeman Frank DelCore.
