Kean Seeks $975K To Upgrade Outdated Hillsborough Police Radio System

The request for Hillsborough is among 20 Community Project Funding requests made by Congressman Tom Kean, Jr. for 2027.

HILLSBOROUGH, NJ — Congressman Tom Kean Jr. is seeking $975,000 for a public safety communications upgrade in Hillsborough Township.

The request is among 20 Community Project Funding requests that Kean's office made to the House Appropriations Committee for consideration in the Fiscal Year 2027 appropriations process.

Each of the six counties in New Jersey’s 7th Congressional District is represented in the list of submissions.

If granted, the funding for the Hillsborough project would be used to modernize and replace outdated portable radio communications equipment used by the Hillsborough Township Police Department.

The request would fund the procurement and deployment of 75 all-band portable radios with interoperability, Wi-Fi connectivity and LTE capabilities.

The justification states the department’s current portable radios are outdated and do not provide reliable communications in complex environments such as schools, large commercial buildings and emergency response scenes.

It also states the existing system does not provide sufficient interoperability between police, fire and other emergency response agencies.

Community Project Funding allows members of Congress to request direct funding for projects that benefit the communities they represent.

"These investments will make a very positive difference in the daily lives of the people we serve by strengthening infrastructure, supporting public safety, and improving quality of life in our communities," said Kean. "I will continue to bring both parties together in Washington, DC to secure the federal support needed to deliver these resources for New Jersey."
