Political Lawn Signs Stolen, Hillsborough Mayor 'Disappointed'
Those who tamper with political signs can be charged with theft, criminal mischief and/or trespassing.
HILLSBOROUGH, NJ — As election day approaches, political lawn signs are reportedly being stolen in Hillsborough.
"Over the years, we have prided ourselves in Hillsborough Township as being ranked one of the best places in America and one of the safest places in New Jersey to live. That being said, I am disappointed by reports of individuals tampering with political lawn signs," said Mayor Shawn Lipani during the Tuesday night committee meeting.
Lipani reminded residents that tampering with (such as stealing or vandalizing) political signs is a violation of other people's freedom of speech.

If someone believes a political sign is illegally placed, they should contact Hillsborough Township’s Zoning Official, Marcy McLaughlin at 908-369-8382.
"It is important, despite what is happening Nationally or in Trenton, that we use this unfortunate incident to reaffirm a policy of zero tolerance for political incivility," said Lipani. "As Mayor of Hillsborough, you have my word and commitment that the Hillsborough Township Committee and I will do our very best to continue to set the right example for civility in politics, throughout the year and especially during campaign season."
Hillsborough Township Chief of Police Mike McMahon added, "Theft of political signs will be thoroughly investigated and prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law."
