Is The Route 206 Project Stopped? Hillsborough Mayor, NJDOT Weigh In
Mayor John Ciccarelli addressed residents about the Route 206 widening project in his latest "Ask the Mayor" segment.
HILLSBOROUGH, NJ — Is the Route 206 widening project in Hillsborough stalled again? Mayor John Ciccarelli shared an update with residents in his latest "Ask the Mayor" segment last week.
"Is the 206 project stopped? Well, it certainly looks like it is based on the lack of equipment on the site along with the lack of construction work ongoing now that the weather is broken," said Ciccarelli.
Ciccarelli said the Township did reach out to the New Jersey Department of Transportation several times over the past month in anticipation of the warm weather coming and "we have yet to receive an update on the status of the job."

"Typically no news is good news. But in this case, I don't feel that way. I think no news is not good news," said Ciccarelli.
Patch reached out to NJDOT for comment.

NJDOT Spokesman Stephen Schapiro said, "No one currently at NJDOT has been contacted by the mayor. NJDOT has spoken to the mayor’s office and offered to provide an update or answer any questions the township may have and provided additional contact information."
Schapiro also listed work that was done over the last several months by NJDOT including "new curb construction continued, watermain installation was completed, and 11 poles were installed for temporary traffic signals at several intersections. Work to backfill the abutments of a new bridge over the creek near Valley Road also was completed."
Work to complete the bridge is expected for this spring, as well as finishing the temporary traffic signal installation, said Schapiro.
Additionally, paving sections of the new widened portion of Route 206 are planned for this spring.
Ciccarelli said he is hoping "to have feedback by the next Township Committee meeting to share with the public."
The next Township Committee meeting is set for Tuesday at 7:30 p.m.
"Hopefully we will have some answers soon," said Ciccarelli.
The $42 million federally-funded project to widen Route 206 was previously halted in May 2023 after the NJDOT terminated its contract with Konkus Corporation.
Since then, Roman Asphalt has been chosen as the new contractor for NJDOT.

This past December, work was being done on the highway at the Falcon Road/Triangle Road intersection.
Route 206 is being widened to two travel lanes in each direction within the project limits beginning south of the Doctors Way intersection and ending around one-half mile north of the Valley Road intersection.
The project is expected to be completed by Fall 2026, according to NJDOT's project website which was last updated on Feb. 27.
