Teen Without Pulse, Not Breathing Rescued By CPR In Hillsborough

HILLSBOROUGH, NJ — A 15-year-old boy, who fainted while playing basketball in Hillsborough, was saved thanks to fast response of a bystander and police on Saturday.

On Saturday, Jan. 7 at around 6 p.m., the Hillsborough Township Police Department went to the Auten Road Intermediate School at 281 Auten Road for a report of a 15-year-old boy that fainted while playing basketball, said Hillsborough Police Sgt. Jack Howard.

The boy was unresponsive, did not have a pulse, and was not breathing, said Howard.

Before Hillsborough Police arrived a bystander began CPR on the boy, which was continued by the arriving officers.

Along with CPR and rescue breathing, the boy was connected to a defibrillator and one shock was administered before he regained a pulse and began breathing on his own, said Howard.

The boy was taken to Robert Wood Johnson Medical Center in New Brunswick where he is listed in stable condition.

"Everyday is a gift… thank you to our amazing PD and to the bystanders that didn’t hesitate. CPR training and defibrillators save lives," wrote Committeeman Doug Tomson.

The recreational basketball league, that the boy was playing, was not affiliated with the Hillsborough school district.
