HOBOKEN, NJ — A new bakery serving breads and sweets from Kazakhstan has moved into the center of Hoboken's main drag.

Dan Bakery and Café serves up coffee, raspberry and chocolate croissants, muffins, cinnamon rolls, ham and spinach croissants, and much more at their spacious spot at 500 Washington St.

The spot was recently home to an inventive ice cream shop, Il Laboratorio del Gelato, which closed because similar shops moved into the area, its owner said. Before that, it was the longtime Hoboken Daily News magazine and grocery shop.

"Our most popular cake is the honey cake," said co-owner Aijan Oztemir on Tuesday, when Patch stopped in. "We have the freshest baked goods that you can find. They're baked every day."

The original Dan, in Morristown, was founded by Anar and Arman Kozhabayev, who are friends of the owner.

The bakeries encourage customers to "Gather. Sip. Stay a while," and the Hoboken location is no exception, with comfortable chairs and seats inside. One of the owners also designed the art on the back wall.

Dan is located at 500 Washington St.
