Arrest Made In Hoboken Carjacking From Early January
The carjacking near the Stevens Institute of Technology campus on Monday wasn't the only one this month, a city spokesperson confirmed.
HOBOKEN, NJ — As police investigate a carjacking that took place near the Hoboken waterfront Monday night, they provided an update on a similar crime earlier this month.
A city spokesperson confirmed on Wednesday that a carjacking occurred on Friday, Jan. 5 on the west side of the city, as someone was removing groceries from their SUV.
An arrest was made a week later, said city spokesperson Marilyn Baer.

Baer shared the following information:
On Friday, Jan. 5, 2024, at approximately 9:45 p.m., Police Officers Anthony Azzoline and H. Montalvo responded to the area of Seventh and Madison Streets on report of a carjacking.

The victim told officers that they parked their 2022 black Audi SUV on the west side of Madison Street to remove groceries from the car.
At that point, an unknown man approached, brandished a firearm, and demanded their keys, according to the victim.
The suspect got into the vehicle and drove away, fleeing the scene.
Following review of area security footage and a week-long investigation by the Hoboken Police Department's Investigations Bureau, police arrested Leonard Souza of Livingston, on Friday, Jan. 12.
He was charged with carjacking and conspiracy to commit carjacking, the city spokesperson said.
Souza was taken to the Hudson County Correctional Facility.
