Company Turns Food Waste Into Compost In Hoboken, Jersey City
A woman-owned business that services Hoboken and Jersey City is helping to stop an avalanche of food scraps from reaching landfills.

HOBOKEN, NJ — As many New Jersey residents focus their attention towards reducing food waste, an eco-minded business that services Hoboken and Jersey City is helping to stop an endless avalanche of food scraps from reaching landfills in the first place.
Since launching in the Hudson Valley of New York, Community Compost Company (CCC) has collected more than a million pounds of food scraps from hundreds of local businesses, which its staff then turns into garden-ready compost that’s available via the Hudson Soil Co.
A certified woman-owned business, CCC expanded to cover Hoboken in 2015 and Jersey City the following year. Learn more about this company and how to sign up for services here.

According to CCC, some of the benefits of composting include:
- Restore soil health and grow healthy food – “Compost improves the health of our soil, which grows the food that we eat. By restoring the quality of our food, we’re keeping ourselves, our loved ones and our community healthy.”
- Fight climate change – “When food scraps, yard waste and paper products reach the landfill, they don’t have the oxygen needed to break down properly and are forced to decompose without it (anaerobically). This process produces methane, a gas 20-30x more effective at trapping heat in the atmosphere than carbon dioxide.”
- Reduce landfilled waste – “22% of our everyday trash is food and can be recycled. According to the EPA, more food reaches landfills and incinerators than any other single material.”

View this post on InstagramWe're pumped about this prototype of a three-bin composting system by @ryreut! We'll use this for smaller batches and to test out different materials. ... It has cedar framing (rot and bug resistant), hardware cloth to keep out the critters and help with aeration, removable front panels and a lid/roof! ... #compost #composting #soilfarm #soil #backyardcompost #hudsonvalley #recycle
