Family-owned Fig Tree Serves Modern American Cuisine

New restaurant on Park Avenue will open later this month.

Gerry Farrelly has high aspirations for the Fig Tree, the forthcoming Park Avenue restaurant he owns with his wife Amelia, her sister Sheila, and Sheila's husband Mark Nisler.

“Our goal is to have singularly the best restaurant in the city,” Farrelly said.

The Farrellys and Nislers have gotten plenty of experience operating restaurants in Hoboken over the past two decades. They own Zack's Oak Bar & Restaurant, and they previously owned Ted & Jo's and TJ's Trout and Ale.

The Fig Tree, named after a fig tree in the backyard of the building at 306 Park Ave., will feature what Farrelly explained as modern American cuisine, a culinary theme that originated in the 1970's with chef Alice Waters and her California restaurant Chez Panisse.

“It's locally sourced, meaning everything comes from within 50 miles,” Farrelly said. “It's seasonal, healthful and organic, and the people preparing it are classically trained.”

The menu includes appetizers like the yellow fin tuna tartare, made from edamame, avocado, sesame, mint, crispy filo, and a Thai chili vinaigrette; entrees such as the grilled East Coast halibut with morel mushrooms, pickled ramps, confit tomato, and saffron cream sauce. The restaurant will also offer two-course plus dessert prix-fixe meals and several chef's specials from executive chef Milton Enriquez.

The Fig Tree will have three dining areas – one in the front that seats up to 20, the main dining room in the middle of the restaurant, and a third in the back that could be reserved for private parties. Farrelly said he hopes to eventually offer outdoor seating in the enclosed backyard. The Fig Tree also has a bar that seats ten.

Farrelly said the new restaurant will open on April 17. For more information, visit the Fig Tree's website.
