A review of the pancakes at Stacks on Washington Street
The newly opened Stacks Pancake House & Cafe is Hoboken's first pancake restaurant. Located in the heart of town on Washington Street, the neat storefront exterior has clear doors so passersby can see inside. I had been one of those passersby on a few different occasions and had noted how packed the place had been. This seemed like a good sign and I was anxious to give it a try.
I arrived mid-week in the afternoon with a friend and a large appetite. We were greeted by a friendly server who instructed us to sit anywhere. The interior of Stacks was very clean and spacious with a chrome and shiny feel, but at the same time warm and inviting.
Stacks serves breakfast all day and the menu boasts 22 different types of pancakes, french toast, omelettes, waffles and pancake wraps. For those not interested in breakfast, they also serve sandwiches and salads.
I, however, was there for the pancakes.
After perusing the menu, my companion and I decided on two pancake dishes and a sandwich item for variety.
Our first pancake dish was called "The Addiction" ($7.25)—three large pancakes with fresh bananas mixed into the batter, topped with more banana and miniature chocolate chips. The pancakes were soft and fluffy and the chocolate chips were melting into the warmth of the pancake. I tried it with and without syrup and both variations were delicious.
I enjoyed our second pancake dish even more. We had "Blueberry Craze" (also $7.25). Just like "The Addiction", "Blueberry Craze" mixes fresh fruit, in this case blueberries, into the batter and then tops the pancake with that same fruit. This dish also featured a blueberry sauce drizzled on the pancake in concentric circles. Pretty and tasty! Each bite was a veritable bursting blueberry explosion.
Finally, we ordered something away from the pancake realm just to see what else was available. The "Grilled Cheese on Our Famous Texas Toast" ($6.50) also did the trick. This entree consisted of big globs of cheese on butter-soaked toasted bread with french fries on the side and a pickle. The fries were especially good—not over-salted, with just the right amount of crisp.
Overall, my experience at Stacks was very enjoyable. Its comfortable atmosphere and delicious food make it a great option for breakfast or a late-night snack.
Luckily, Stacks is now open 24 hours a day on Thursday through Saturday for all your after-hour cravings.
