Beloved Bakery In Jersey City Will Close This Weekend After 46 Years

A family-run Italian bakery that opened in Jersey City in 1980 will close for good after this weekend.

JERSEY CITY, NJ — Elio's Bakery and Deli, a mainstay on Jersey City's west side for 46 years, will serve up its last pastries on Sunday, the owners confirmed.

The shop, at 442 West Side Ave., is known for its cookies, sandwiches, and Italian bread.

It's also known for lacking an official website or social media — just old-school treats for those who stop in, from cannolis to Sicilian donuts.

"A lot of people are coming in," said family member Vincenzo Tubito on Friday. "We're not closing because we weren't successful. it's more of a family issue."

He said that lots of people have contacted them to ask them not to close. "We're getting a huge reaction," he said. "We never expected this."

"Owners Elio and Anna Tubito have been in this location since 1980," noted a local Hoboken-based real estate group, in a tribute on their website. "Generations of families revel in their memories of Elio’s growing up while newer residents too love coming here to get a taste of the 'real' Jersey City."

They added, "It’s a real treat to have such a classic Jersey City small business remain standing and thriving."

But soon, the classic shop will be gone.

Tubito said the family isn't sure what will replace the bakery.

It's expected to open from 5 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Sunday, although they may stay open longer, he said.
