Heavy Duty Gym to Open in Southwest Corner

The Intrepid Gym will be located at 51 Harrison Street.

Residents and workers in the southwest corner of Hoboken will soon have a new convenient place to exercise. The Intrepid Gym is expected to open in two weeks on the second floor of 51 Harrison St.

Owner Adam Kant said he wanted to open his own gym after working as a personal trainer. Originally from Colorado, he studied exercise science at Rutgers and later earned accreditation through the National Strength and Conditioning Association.

"I'd been picking up clients in Hoboken and I just decided I'd rather start working out of my own gym," Kant said.

Kant said the Intrepid Gym will specialize in offering high intensity interval training that focuses on functional and body weight training exercises. Along with a handful of other expert trainers Kant will teach classes to individuals and groups. Kant said Intrepid will train clients according to their athletic ability and goals, whether they are looking to lose a few pounds, tone up or adhere to a more rigorous regimen.

Once construction is complete the gym will feature a large open space which Kant said will allow for greater flexibility in training clients.

“The space is really nice with high ceilings,” Kant said. “It's an open space, which will allow people to do different exercises.”

Some of the equipment will include professional grade weight machines, medicine balls, gymnast rings and a VersaClimber, which is a machine that simulates climbing a wall.

Kant said that clients will also be able to come to Intrepid and use the equipment whether they are taking class or not.

Kant said he chose the name Intrepid because the word also means fearless.

“It fits well with my philosophy,” he said.
