Here’s Why You Saw Scooters Zipping Around Pier 13 In Hoboken

Councilman Mike DeFusco called the electric scooters "the future of rideshare here in Hoboken."

HOBOKEN, NJ — On Monday, Hoboken residents and visitors near Pier 13 may have witnessed an unusual sight: a fleet of people on electric scooters.

The scooters were part of a promotional demonstration from “micro-mobility” company Lime, which hosted a test drive event at the busy Hoboken landmark throughout the day. According to Lime, the scooters offer a “reliable, affordable transportation option” that is perfect for cities interested in “urban sustainability.”

While Lime operates in more than 70 towns across the U.S., Hoboken is not one of them. Currently, Lime operates in two New Jersey cities: Keyport and Plainfield. But the company may be looking into changing that.

“Americans all over our country are using Lime’s shared electric scooters to get around their cities—to get to work, to run some errands, or just to have some fun,” said Lime local general manager Gil Kazimirov. “Today [in Hoboken], we showed New Jersey residents how our scooters work and a little about the innovative sharing network that links our mobility options to riders.”

The scooter demonstration drew an enthusiastic thumbs-up from Councilman Michael DeFusco, who called the vehicles “the future of rideshare here in Hoboken.”
