HOBOKEN, NJ — After the inauguration of new Hoboken Mayor Emily Jabbour last month, the City Council has chosen a new president.

The choice of Councilman Ruben Ramos Jr. came as a surprise to some, as Ramos was among the candidates who ran against Jabbour in November. But the vote was seen as a show of unity.

Ramos told Patch, "I was genuinely grateful for the unity shown by my colleagues. At the end of the day, we all care deeply about Hoboken and want what is best for our community."

He added, "Elections come and go, but governing requires collaboration, respect, and a shared commitment to getting things done. I am really looking forward to working with everyone on the council and with the administration to achieve great outcomes for Hoboken and keep our city moving forward."

The council had two nominees for vice president. New council member Diane Imus nominated Tiffanie Fisher, citing transparency as an important factor.

The council ultimately voted 5-4 for Councilman Phil Cohen, who had been aligned with previous mayor Ravi Bhalla. Ramos was the fifth vote.

The council will next meet on Wednesday, Feb. 11.
