HOBOKEN, NJ — Hoboken police arrested a Union City man on Jan. 2 whom they allege stole packages from Hoboken on four occasions from October through December — and then allegedly stole a car on New Year's Eve. To top it off, police say that after the man was arrested, they found out he was wanted in California and Illinois.

Police arrested Luis Lourido, 52, on Bergenline Avenue in Union City on Jan. 2. They charged him with burglary, theft of packages, and theft of a motor vehicle.

Police say the alleged thefts began on Oct. 12, 2019, when a man entered a residential building at Eleventh Street and Willow Avenue, placed multiple packages in a black bag, and left.

They say that the same man entered a building at the same corner on Dec. 4 at 4:34 a.m. In that case, he allegedly grabbled multiple packages with his hands and carried them out.

Three days later, on Dec. 7, at 5:56 a.m., according to police, the same man entered the same building and carried multiple packages out of the building.

Police allege that on Dec. 31, the man began tugging on door handles in the area of Ninth and Clinton streets, three blocks from the corner where the other thefts occurred. Around 8:11 a.m., the man found a vehicle unsecure and allegedly drove away. Police said the car's owner believes she may have left her keys in the car.

Detectives investigated and determined that the suspect might be in a certain area of Union City. Around 9:52 p.m. on Jan. 2, police saw the man they were looking for and stopped him. They allege that the man, Luis Lourido, was in possession of drug paraphernalia at the time of his arrest.

In addition to the theft charges, they charged him with being a fugitive from justice because he was wanted in California and Illinois, according to Lt. Danillo Cabrera.

He also had a bail jumping warrant from Jersey City, police said. He was transported to the Hudson County Jail.

The detectives assigned to the theft investigations were Officer Connor Milne, Officer Fabian Quinones, and Detective Michael Miranda. Detective John Quinones and Detective Adam Colon assisted with the arrest.
