Hoboken Resident's Video Catches Lightning Striking World Trade Center

HOBOKEN, NJ — Hoboken residents are understandably wary of storms after Tropical Depression Ida drenched Hoboken caused flooding of rain on Sept. 1. But one resident was able to find beauty during a nighttime thunderstorm a week ago Monday. Click the circle to watch it.

Hoboken resident Anel Laurens and her family caught this intense lightning strike of the World Trade Center on Sept. 13.

"We had such a spectacular thunder and lightning storm tonight," she posted on Facebook. "The World Trade Centre’s tower was hit so many times."

The World Trade Center is actually struck by lightning at least 20 times each year, according to the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey. They run a webpage that contains a video of lightning striking the towers, as well as safety tips.

"One WTC is safe during lightning strikes because of its state-of-the-art protection system, which is based on the same concepts pioneered by Benjamin Franklin," notes the page.

One World Trade Center was struck 189 times from 2015 to 2020, according to another source, making it one of the most often struck buildings in the nation.

Storms Coming Up This Week

While there are two tropical storms spinning in the Atlantic right now — forecasters don't predict they'll reach the East Coast. However, the area is expecting a drenching of rain on Thursday.

Thursday and Friday may also include potentially heavy wind gusts. Right now, accumulations each day are expected to be half an inch, or at least a tenth of what National Weather Service spotters say fell in the area during Ida. But as much as an inch may fall Thursday night.
