The situation had to do with a lack of substitutes, the superintendent said.

HOBOKEN, NJ — Late on Thursday, Hoboken Superintendent of Schools Christine Johnson made an announcement: Schools will continue to be remote on Friday, as they were Thursday during the snowstorm.

"The Hoboken Public School District will operate a full day of remote teaching and learning tomorrow, Friday, December 18th," she wrote. "While this may not be a popular announcement among many families, I must report that over the past few days we are experiencing a shortage of substitutes to cover for those staff members who are out."

She added, "While we have an adequate number of substitutes on our per diem list, not every substitute agrees to work every day. Around the holidays these numbers shrink and with the COVID pandemic, many are more hesitant to work every day. This puts a strain on our schools. As a result of COVID, we cannot combine classes or put multiple classes in a large space."
