Hoboken To Start Modified 'Slow Streets' Pilot This Weekend
The city will restrict (but not close) portions of Bloomfield and Fifth streets to traffic so walkers and bikers can socially distance.

HOBOKEN, NJ — The city of Hoboken will implement, for this weekend, a new version of "open streets" that partly closes certain blocks in order to slow down traffic. With fewer cars, bikers and pedestrians can walk and socially distance more safely.
The main difference between the new "slow streets" and the prior "open streets" pilot is that intersecting cross streets will remain open. The program also makes exceptions for local access, deliveries, and emergency vehicles. Drivers who need to use the streets must keep the speed limit to 5 MPH.
The streets for this weekend will be Bloomfield Street between Observer Highway and Fifth Street, and Fifth Street between Hudson Street and Park Avenue, from 8 am. to 8 p.m Saturday and Sunday.

Businesses on those streets can take advantage of the city's new rules for sidewalk cafes, parklets, and streateries, if they've followed guidelines.
