Lack of Low-Cost Spay and Neuter Clinics in Hudson County Leads to Unique Solution

Local humane society opens own facility in RV; Was driving up to 80 miles for services.

Does Hudson County have a lack of low-cost spay and neuter clinics for cats and dogs?

This is the alleged quandary that led the Liberty Humane Society – which services Hoboken, Jersey City and Bayonne – to open its own dedicated spay/neuter clinic in late March.

In order to reduce the unwanted pet population and ease the financial burden for potential adopters, the LHS has a strict spay-neuter policy for its adoptable animals. The problem lay in the fact that there were no low-cost spay/neuter clinics in Hudson County, according to shelter staff.

As recently as last month, the nonprofit organization was forced to transport its adoptable animals up to 80 miles from its Hudson County location to their closest partner facility. According to a release, the process placed a tremendous amount of stress on both staff members and the animals in their care.

“Each time animals were sent out for surgery it required a vehicle for transport, an entire day of staff time, and [placed] stress on the animal as it recovered during the ride back,” LHS staff claimed.

The shelter’s new clinic is housed in a customized, fully-equipped RV, which is parked on LHS grounds. According to a release, the clinic is staffed by experienced and specialized veterinary staff.

While access to the clinic is only available for animals in the shelter’s care at this time, shelter officials hope to grow the clinic’s capacity to eventually serve other local shelters and rescues and to help in TNR efforts, according to a release.
