Antique Furniture Store Closing After 17 Years

Michelangela has sold antique furniture, holiday decorations and gifts for nearly two decades on Washington Street.

Michelangela, the midtown store that has sold a mix of antique furniture, holiday decorations, baby clothes and gifts, is set to close after 17 years in business.

For the past 15 years, Michelangela has been located at .

According to Beth Tarson, a friend who has helped current owner Heidi Peterson run the shop, Peterson decided to close rather than to continue juggling the store and her full-time work as a music teacher and part-time work as a musician.

"The lease is up and it was a matter of resigning for another five years, and Heidi just decided she wanted to take a break," Tarson said. Tarson called the decision "a closing" rather than "going out of business."

Peterson came to own the store after it had been sold through a chain of friends over the years. The store is named after the two original owners, Michelle and Angela.

Tarson said the exact closing date will depend on whenever the store runs out of inventory. She estimated that would happen by the middle of June. From now until then all prices in the store will be reduced by 50 percent.

Tarson said the store emailed its most loyal customers with the news.

"It's very sad," she said, "but we've gotten so many wonderful responses that it's been heartwarming."
