Construction Begins On 14,000-Square-Foot Supermarket In Uptown Hoboken

Brooklyn's Dumbo Market has begun construction of a 14,000-square-foot supermarket in Hoboken.

HOBOKEN, NJ — Near the northern tip of Hoboken, work has begun on a new 14,000-square-foot supermarket, according to a report on Monday.

Jersey Digs reported that Dumbo Market, a supermarket in Brooklyn, is behind the ongoing construction at the base of 1425 Washington St., a residential building (see photos above).

That newly developed block of upper Washington Street contains several relatively new businesses, including Cork Wines & Spirits and Daybase coworking space. Dumbo market will be across the street from both.

Dumbo opened its first location in the DUMBO (Down Under the Manhattan Bridge Overpass) section of Brooklyn at 66 Front St., the story notes. The Hoboken location will be its first.

It will have some competition from Trader Joe's and Kings Fresh, each a few blocks away. But it will be twice the size of the 7,000-foot Kings.

The real estate firm behind the building notes on its website, "Hoboken is making the suburbs cool again with its walkable and culture-laden downtown core drawing affluent millennials, first-rate retailers, and young families looking to escape the city."

Meanwhile, the former southern-Hoboken location of Kings that closed in 2020 is supposed to be replaced by Sprove Market eventually. The new market has not opened, so as of now, southern Hoboken is without a supermarket, while uptown and the west side have four in total.

A supermarket is also expected to come to the southwest corner of town once the former Chambord space at 38 Jackson St. is redeveloped.
