Photographers captured lightning hitting the World Trade Center during the storms on Saturday, including a Hoboken-based photo.

HOBOKEN, NJ — Saturday's thunderstorms rolled through Hudson County quickly, and one photojournalist was just as quick, capturing photos of lightning strikes from Hoboken that amassed more than a million views on social media.

Professional photographer Gary Hershorn caught the lightning striking the World Trade Center on Saturday night, with both the NYC and Jersey City skylines visible. The first photo he posted on Twitter amassed more than 1.1 million views. You can see that photo here.

"It looks like they're emanating from One World Trade," wrote a follower. "Great shot, Gary!"

Hershorn then posted a second image, wondering which he liked more:

"Here is a second photo of lightning fanning out from One World Trade Center over the Hudson River towards Jersey City, NJ, Saturday evening in New York City. Not sure which of the two I like better."

Another photographer, Max Giuliani, earned more than 2 million views for his video of the lightning strikes, Newsweek reported.

Hoboken and Jersey City may have gotten off easy. At least five tornadoes were reported further south in New Jersey.

The World Trade Center is actually struck by lightning at least 20 times each year, according to the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey. The PA runs a webpage that contains a video of lightning striking the towers, as well as safety tips.

"One WTC is safe during lightning strikes because of its state-of-the-art protection system, which is based on the same concepts pioneered by Benjamin Franklin," notes the page.
