Patch Picks: Best Places to Find a Movie

Every week, Patch picks the best in Hoboken.

Every week Patch picks the best in Hoboken. Whether it's the best place to get a cup of coffee, or the best place to take a date, we'll tell you about the Mile Square's finest (in no particular order, of course). This week: Patch picks the best places to find a movie.

We're not Hollywood, but Hoboken does have a movie history of its own. The award-winning "On the Waterfront" was shot on our docks. We've been home to movie star Joe Pantoliano, as well as director John Sayles and documentary producer . Oh, and Ol' Blue Eyes was in a movie or two too.

With that history in mind, here are the best places in Hoboken to find movies, whether you go see one in a theater or you buy or rent one to take home.

  • First, there's our local movie theater, the Clearview Cinemas on 14th Street. The  theater shows a steady schedule of major studio releases, including matinees, across five screens. Adult tickets run $11, children's tickets cost $8.00
  • If you prefer watching in your home theater, you still have plenty of options to rent despite the recent closing of Blockbuster. Definitely acquaint yourself with RedBox and Instaflix, services which offer DVD rentals for as low as $1.00 per night. You can find a RedBox in Shoprite and an Instaflix box in A&P. They both have the latest films. Choose one, watch it and return it to the box at your leisure.
  • Another great place to rent movies is our very own Hoboken Public Library. You should already have a card. Just stop by and check out their very wide and modern selection, and loan for up to seven days. The library also screens movies, usually accompanied by a guest lecturer.
  • Many larger convenience stores and pharmacies in the city also devote  a shelf to selling DVDs. CVS is a good example. The titles might be older, but they are usually sold for a discount price.
  • Stevens Institute of Technology periodically screens films at its , such as last year's Music Legends film series.
  • If you're new to the city, one of the best forms of summer entertainment Hoboken offers is its outdoor film series, Movies Under the Stars. It's just like going to a drive-in theater, except you don't need your car. The film selection is diverse and current. This can be an especially fun activity for families.

So there you have it, the best places to find a movie in Hoboken. You know, Hoboken High School has a highly regarded theater program, so maybe a future movie star is walking the streets of our city this very moment.
