Powerful Portraits & Landscapes: Student Photographer In Hoboken Shares His Favorites
A high school student and photographer in Hoboken, Teddy Almond, explains which photos are his favorites, and why.

HOBOKEN, NJ — My name is Teddy Almond and I am a junior in high school. I have been passionate about photography all my life. Ever since I learned how to use a camera I have been infatuated with its inner workings and what it means to be a photographer. I try not to go anywhere without my camera and never without my phone so I never miss a shot.
Nowadays, when everyone has a smart phone in their pocket, it can be easy to forget the difference between taking pictures and photography as I feel that the latter is almost starting to fade away.
I have continued to practice my craft. Here are some of my favorite photos I've taken.

This is a photograph I took of, at the time, presidential candidate, Joe Biden. This was taken in May of 2019 during his first rally for the presidential bid.

This image was taken at Arches National Park in Utah. For me, what made this picture so powerful is the way that it contrasts the people sitting in this enormous crater of blue sky look small and insignificant, almost humbling.

This image depicts the Ridgeway in England as it cuts through the British downs near Swindon. I am particularly fond of this image as the thin white strip that is the chalk-covered path and the thin strip of green trees really contrast with the vivid landscape.
In this image, we see a composition of an urban landscape, a man riding a bicycle, and a woman holding two bags. I personally like this picture because of the nearly saddened look on the woman’s face as well as the motionless position that she assumed which is contrasted by the moving bicycle as it passes her. For me, it almost looks as if time has just slowed down for the subject.
Shown here is Butler Library on the Columbia University campus in Manhattan. I put it within a frame of tree branches to really highlight the serenity experienced when one visits the campus. In the middle of the hustle and bustle of Manhattan is this green landscape filled with old buildings and towering architecture. For the viewer, it almost feels as if you are peeking through the bushes at this magnificent building and you might never notice that you were ever in Manhattan.

For me, this is one of my favorite portraits. I took it of a woman sitting at home, thinking, looking out her window at the clothes drying on a line outside.
