Early Voting For Primary Elections: Who You Can Vote For In Hudson County

There are some contested local races in Hudson County on Tuesday, so it's worth getting out to vote. Early voting is this weekend.

HUDSON COUNTY, NJ — Just because there's no presidential election this year, doesn't mean you should avoid voting on Primary Election Day this coming Tuesday (or earlier) in New Jersey.

In a primary, candidates vie to be the nominee for their party. Then they face the opposing party in November, and independents can also enter the race.

Several local races are contested in the primary. These races could help determine how your county government and state legislature will spend your tax dollars, and which programs it offers your town.

In Hudson County, Hoboken, and Jersey City, here are some races to pay attention to on Tuesday.

Races To Watch

County Executive:

Only five counties in New Jersey have a paid Hudson County executive. Hudson County's executive — up for election this year — oversees the administration of county parks, roads, the jail, personnel, and other facilities.

But who will get the nomination from their party to replace outgoing County Executive Tom DeGise this November?

Right now, DeGise's chief of staff, Craig Guy, is hoping to get the Democratic nomination in the June 6 New Jersey primary, and he's backed by the powerful Hudson County Democratic Organization. But he faces opposition in the primary by Eleana Little, backed by the Hudson County Progressive Democrats.

Obviously, Guy has the political advantage. Some have pointed out this Hudson County mailer from earlier this year that featured Guy prominently, saying it seemed more like a campaign ad.

Other Races Affecting Hoboken And Jersey City

Hudson County is also overseen by a nine-member Board of Commissioners, once called the county freeholders.

Incumbent Anthony Romano, who represents Hoboken and Jersey City Heights, is being challenged by Ron Bautista of the Progressive Democrats. Both Democratic candidates live in Hoboken.

On the Republican side, Joseph Branco of Hoboken is running for the nomination, and will challenge one of the above in November.

Here are other races affecting Hoboken and Jersey City:

State Senate:

  • 32nd District (Hudson): The primary is uncontested. Then, in November, incumbent State Sen. Raj Mukherji (D) will face Ilyas Mohammed (R).

State Assembly:

  • 32nd District (Hudson): (2 seats) The primaries for the two seats are uncontested. Candidates John Allen (D) and Jessica Ramirez (D) will face Robert Ramos (R) and Alex Garcia (R) in November.

Hoboken has six ward City Council seats up for election in November, each one representing a section of town. However, the races are non-partisan and there are no primaries. Candidates must file to run by the end of August. See a recent story about those who have entered the races here.
