Stevens Institute of Technology dining gets earthy

Stevens Dining by Sodexo is partnering with SAVE, a Stevens Institute of Technology organization of environmentally conscious students.

This April marks Earth Day’s forty-fifth anniversary. Throughout the month, Stevens Dining by Sodexo is partnering with SAVE, a Stevens Institute of Technology campus-based organization of environmentally conscious students, to promote sustainability awareness through a challenge called #iCommit2SAVE.

As part of Sodexo’s national sustainability challenge, Stevens Dining will promote “iCommit pledges” on campus. Commitments are written on a recyclable piece of card board committing to an earth-friendly action. During the last week of April, all the commitments are gathered to make a collage which will be shared on social media.

Pierce Dining Hall will feature a mini garden during lunch with soil, egg carton, and a variety of herbs, sprouts and beans seeds. Stevens Institute of Technology students, staff, and faculty will be invited to plant a mini garden, take it home and make the commitment to tend and grow their garden.

On April 22, Stevens Dining Services is partnering with the SAVE student organization for an event on Palmer Lawn. SAVE will be bringing a food truck on campus to give free tacos to all who participate in environmental activities, including attending an information session on chemicals, waste, and solar powered cars, or planting a mini garden.

Students will be encouraged to purchase Stevens Dining Services reusable totes to replace every day plastic bag use. For every tote sold, Sodexo will donate one dollar to SAVE. Every time a customer uses the bag at CJ’s the customer receives fifty cents off and Sodexo will donate an additional fifty cents to SAVE.

“We love working with students on campus sustainability initiatives,” said Cynthia Farabaugh, General Manager. “One of the great things about working for Sodexo is the commitment to environmental stewardship and the ability to support events like this.”
