Teen Faces 4 Charges In Hoboken Shooting Near Flag Football Game

HOBOKEN, NJ — A 19-year-old Hoboken resident was arrested early Friday morning on four charges in connection with the shooting Monday of a 17-year-old resident near a youth flag football game that was in progress.

The 17-year-old male victim, who was shot in the neck, was taken to Jersey City Medical Center and released later that evening.

Halim Gilyard, 19, was arrested three blocks from the crime scene at 2:30 a.m. on Friday and charged with:

• Criminal attempt (murder)
• Possession of a weapon for unlawful purposes
• Unlawful possession of a weapon, and
• Causing or risking widespread injury

The shooting on Monday aroused much conversation in Hoboken because it took place alongside Mama Johnson Field in the Hoboken Housing Authority projects, where a youth flag football game was in progress. READ MORE: Teen Shot In Hoboken Monday

Public Safety Director Kenneth Ferrante said Tuesday that the 17-year-old victim was with a group of three or four people when another group walked up to him and shot him.

After an investigation, Hoboken detectives, along with Hudson County SWAT Team members, executed a search warrant and arrest warrant at a home at Fourth and Adams streets on Friday morning.

"Through the investigation, led by Detective John Quinones and assisted by other members of the Detective Bureau, they were able to identify Gilyard as one of the shooters from that night," police said Friday.

Police added, "Gilyard was taken into custody without incident. Gilyard was transported to police headquarters where he was processed on all above listed charges."

Gilyard was then brought to the Hudson County jail.

Officials have said that a total of eight casings were found in the area. At least one bullet hit a nearby home, but no one inside was injured.

Third Incident On Fourth Street

Police have not released a motive, but there were two other gun incidents on Fourth Street this year, including one at the corner where Gilyard was arrested.

In addition, during the pandemic, a Jersey City official noted a string of ongoing shootings in a "feud" among young people in Hoboken and Jersey City Heights. Twelve young men 16-27 were killed in Jersey City in 2021, with many more shootings that didn't result in a fatality.
