Tornadoes, Blackouts, Hail Possible During Afternoon Thunderstorm, Hudson County Warns

Hudson County gave an approximate time for thunderstorms Monday that may bring hail and a tornado to Hoboken, Jersey City, and Secaucus.

HUDSON COUNTY, NJ — The County of Hudson issued a warning Monday morning about heavy thunderstorms expected to arrive after 1 p.m. that could bring an inch of hail, an "isolated tornado," and flooding. The threat continues until around 9 p.m., the alert said.

"Damaging wind gusts in excess of 58 MPH could damage trees and power lines," they noted.

At the same time, the National Weather Service issued a Coastal Flood Statement applicable to the hours between 7 p.m. and 11 p.m. in Hudson and eastern Essex and Union counties.

While less than an inch of rain is expected to fall on Hudson County (as opposed to 7 inches or more than fell during Hurricane Ida), the downpour is expected to occur in a concentrated period of several hours on Monday.

The county advised, "Secure outdoor decorations and furniture. Avoid areas prone to flooding. Avoid standing water. Turn around...don't drown."

People attempting to drive or wade through floods have died in the water, including during Hurricane Ida in New Jersey last September.

The NWS expects "Brief minor flooding of the more vulnerable locations near the waterfront and shoreline" and also warned against driving through floodwaters.
