Tribute to Professor Jim Jacobson

When I was asked to read this citation on behalf of James Jacobson, also known as Jake, I was thrilled that he thought of me to honor him for his triple Bene Merenti. Jake’s journey with Saint Peter’s began 60 years ago, initially as a favor to assist with the College’s Reading Center under the guidance of Dr. Caulfield. Little did he know that this act of goodwill would evolve into a remarkable 60-year tenure of dedication and service.

Jake is the first recipient of the “Triple Bene Merenti,” a recognition that alone is a true testament to his extraordinary commitment and accomplishments.

Born and raised in Hoboken, Jake served honorably in the Army, achieving the rank of Sergeant before his discharge. His educational journey continued at New Jersey City University, Yeshiva University, and ultimately, Saint Peter’s. Jake has been married to his wife Susan for 61 years, and together they have raised four children, all but one attended Saint Peter’s. They are also blessed with six grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Throughout his distinguished 60-year career at Saint Peter’s, Jake has worn many hats. He served as the Director of the College Reading Program for 21 years, Chairman of the American Studies Program for 37 years, Chairman of the Secretarial Studies Program for 9 years and Coordinator of New Faculty Orientation for 17 years. His leadership extended to roles as Interim Associate Academic Dean, Interim Assistant Academic Dean, and Interim Director of Athletics. Jake’s contributions to the athletic department started in 1979 when he served as the head varsity coach for both the men’s and women’s Cross Country teams.

As an accomplished athlete himself, Jake was inducted into the Athletic Hall of Fame at Hoboken/Demarest High School, New Jersey City University, and Saint Peter’s University. Among his many academic awards and honors, one stands out remarkably: the Ellis Island Medal of Honor. This prestigious award places him alongside nine U.S. Presidents, highlighting his exceptional impact and achievements.

However, Jake is perhaps best known for his role in shaping future educators. He served as Chairman of the Education Department for 27 years and made a significant impact on every student he taught. Last, but not least he served as Director of the Reading Center for 37 years. Under his guidance, the Center ran Saturday morning remedial programs and the famous 4R Summer Camp Program for young children in Jersey City.

On a personal note, I met Jake 27 years ago at this very spot—47 Glenwood Avenue, where the Education Department once stood. It was 1997, and as a freshman searching for a work-study job and contemplating my major, I found Jake. To me, he was—and still is—the embodiment of the Education Department. I discovered not just a mentor, but a home away from home, a wonderful man who became my teacher, my mentor, my friend, and a second dad.

Jake’s tireless dedication to our students and his many contributions to the University make him a truly deserving recipient of this honor. Please join me in celebrating Jake’s exceptional career and his profound impact on our Saint Peter’s community.
