Walgreens In Downtown Hoboken Closes Suddenly

A Walgreens drug store on Hoboken's main street closed this week with a message for customers.

HOBOKEN, NJ — One of the three Walgreens locations in Hoboken closed this week.

On Tuesday, customers found signs taped to the doors of the location at 101-105 Washington St., five blocks from the train station.

The signs said the store was closed permanently, and that their prescriptions would be transferred to the CVS store a block away, at 59 Washington St.

Earlier this year, Walgreens announced plans to close 150 locations in the United States by August 2024 in order to cut costs, reports said. CVS and Rite-Aid plan to close stores as well.

Hoboken has two other Walgreens locations. Employees at the Walgreens in Shipyard Lane said Wednesday that they had not heard of any plans to close that location.

The 101 Washington St. building was once home to Washington Savings Bank, and its 20-foot ceilings and other bank architecture remain.
