Working Out With Furry Friends
Patch's Danielle Elliot is a fitness nut. But she's not one to spend lots of money on a workout. Her weekly column will explore all the free fitness options offered in the Mile Square.

Working out with a friend is so much more fun than going at it alone.
Whether because it increases motivation, sparks the competitive spirit or gives you a chance to socialize, it doesn't matter. The bottom line is that when someone else its relying on you, you tend to show up instead of procrastinate, and often last longer because you are distracted from thinking about how hard you are working.
I've missed having a workout buddy since college. At school I ran with my roommate or other friends. Since then I wished I could find someone so evenly paced with my style. Then again, I dont miss feeling judged when I'm having a slow day. So ive been wishy-washy about replacing my running mates.

Over the weekend, I found the perfect new partner. She doesn't laugh if I'm tired or can't keep up for some reason. She just turns and gives me a little smile and waits for me. Furthermore, she loves running by the Hoboken waterfront.
She also doesn't gossip, which is awesome because I hate talking while working out. How did I find her?

It was simple. I was dog sitting this week for a friend.
After working out with Gracie, a 12-pound Havanese, all weekend, I am ready to go out and get my own pup. Her energy is addicting. Even after going for a lengthy morning run, i found myself running around in the park with her, then over at the dog park. We added a walk in the early evening before I headed out with friends, then another when I got home.
I figured I just had so much energy because it was a temporary situation, but after talking to a few proud pet owners, I learned that many credit their dogs with keeping them in. shape.
"She gets me up and out for a walk before work, even when I'd rather just lay in bed," says Gracie's owner, katie. "She is my biggest motivating factor sometimes."
I'm not advocating for everyone to go out and buy or adopt a dog—which can be difficult in the Mile Square—but try borrowing one from a friend. You, and your fitness routine, will not regret it.
Don't be hung up on the vision of a big friendly athletic dog. Any four legged friend that is willing to run around will do. Even if the dog isn't the most rambunctious, adding a few extra walks to your routine is well worth it.
