Bites Nearby: The Boondocks Fishery in Red Bank

This summer enjoy great fish in funky little lobster shack on the Navesink.

Overview: Located in Red Bank’s Marine Park, Boondocks is a small taste of Key West on the Navesink with an incredible view. Boondocks is only open in the summer, so you only have a couple of months to try this fresh Fishery on the Navasink.

Decor:  Boondocks is set up to look like one of those fish shacks you would see down south. It is a small red building that houses the kitchen with a tent. Under the tent are tables with an “Order Here” sign linking the two.  The building itself has old-fashioned fishing signs like “Lobster” and “Crabs,” but the beautiful view of the Navesink River is what makes the décor!

The Drinks: Boondocks is B.Y.O.B. and also serves a variety of soft drinks.

Appetizers: Appetizers are plentiful here at Boondocks with "fresh catch” items such as Steamers (market price) and Grilled Tuna Bites ($8.95) as well as traditional Mozzarella Sticks ($6.95). We ordered the Cajun Grilled Tuna Bites. The Bites were large seared pieces of tuna seasoned with a hint of Cajun spice. Even though we shared the appetizer, Boondocks’  Tuna Bites were large enough to feed one person for an entrée!

Entrees: Boondocks entrée menu was filled with fresh fish specialties like a Fresh Grouper Sandwich ($12.95) and fresh Fish Burrito ($11.95).   The Lobster Roll ($14.95) is the specialty of the house and came with large pieces of fresh lobster made into a lobster salad on a roll.  And the Shrimp Roll ($12.95) was a delicious mix of shrimp, avocado, and fresh tomato mixed with vinaigrette on a roll. Both came with chips, pickle and cole slaw.

Desserts:  Boondocks does not offer dessert, but if you still have room after your meal, you could easily walk into Red Bank for a cupcake or another sweet treat.

Service: Boondocks is self order – the waitress hands you the menu, then you go to the window and order your meal. Once ordered, they hand you a large hand painted number to place on your table. When your order is up, a waitress brings you your food. This method really lends itself to the casual atmosphere of Boondocks.

Signature Dish: Tuesday is Lobster Night at Boondocks. You get two 1-pound lobsters for $24.95. Get there early, because I hear the lobsters go fast!
