A college student has been charged with attempted homicide this week after trying to kill his roommate, police said.

Joseph Walsh, 21, of Hazlet was charged with attempted homicide after stabbing his roommate during an altercation away from the College of New Jersey campus, police said.

The incident happened around 7 a.m. on Monday when Ewing Township police received a report from a Crescent Avenue home that a man "banged" on the door and sought help after he was stabbed, police said.

The victim, who was not identified, said he had been wounded by his roommate, Walsh, following an altercation.

The victim was treated at the hospital and released while Walsh was transported to the Mercer County Correction Center, police said.

Walso was also charged with aggravated assault with a weapon, possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose, terroristic threats, criminal mischief and possession of marijuana and drug paraphernalia, police said.

A spokesman for TCNJ told nj.com Tuesday that Walsh is a student at the college and said he is on a voluntary leave of absence for this semester.
