Hazlet PD Warns Residents: Watch Out For Gift Card Scam

The department noted an influx of gift card scams during the holiday season last year. Here's how to avoid falling for the scam:

HAZLET, NJ - The Hazlet Township Police Department is warning residents of a seasonal scam that saw an “influx” of related reports this time last year.

In a Nov. 6 social media post, the police department noted that scammers put fake barcodes over the actual bar codes on gift cards. Upon activation, the money goes to the scammer's card instead of the card purchased, according to the post.

Here’s how to avoid falling for the scam:

  • Select a card from the middle of the rack.
  • Check the packaging has not been tampered with.
  • Ensure the barcode is legitimate and not covered by a sticker or any other means.
  • Check the barcode numbers on the back of the card match the numbers on the packaging.

“With the holiday season rapidly approaching, take the time to ensure the gift card you choose for a loved one doesn't fund a scam artist,” the department said.
