Hazlet Police Remembers Fallen Residents On Sept. 11
On Friday, Hazlet police paid tribute at the Veterans Park memorial to those lost 19 years ago. See below for other memorials around town:
HAZLET, NJ – While Hazlet did not host a ceremony open to the public this year due to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic, officers from the Hazlet Township Police Department paid tribute last week to 12 individuals who never came back home on Sept. 11, 2001.
Outside of the Cullen Center on Friday, police officers joined Comedian Jon Stewart and resident Laurie Tietjen in remembering the late Port Authority police officer Kenneth F. Tietjen, as well as others memorialized in Hazlet’s Sept. 11 tribute statue.
Committeeman Michael Sachs was also present, seen placing a wreath at the memorial on Friday morning:

The names and portraits of those lost are engraved into the nearly 10-foot stone monument at Veterans Park. Almost all of those dedicated were Hazlet residents, with some being children of Hazlet residents or former residents.

- Brendan Lang
- Roseanne Lang
- Steven B. Paterson
- Matthew Picerno
- Edward Frank Pullis
- John Resta, Sylvia Resta and Baby Resta
- Astrid Sohan
- Kenneth F. Tietjen
- Lisa L. Trerotola
The township hosts several other longstanding tributes to victims of the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks that can be visited year-round, including the Hazlet Youth Athletic League Steven B. Paterson Field as well as a memorial at the North Centerville Fire Company.
A marker in memory of those lost to the attacks also stands outside Amato’s Karate on Palmer Avenue.
