Holmdel Hurricanes Get Ready To Swim Their Way to Success

New coach prepares team for upcoming season.

Members of the Holmdel Hurricanes welcomed the warm temperatures this week as they entered the cold Holmdel Swim Club pool for the first practice of the 2011 swim team season.  The team, with over one hundred seventy kids registered this year, will compete in the Monmouth County Swim League.  Members range in age from 5-18 and compete in four strokes: freestyle, backstroke, butterfly and breast.

The team practices each weekday at the Holmdel Swim Club, working to improve their individual times and be ready to compete in meets twice a week.  The season concludes with Championships in late July.

The team this year will be under the leadership of a new head coach, Ruth Davis.  Ms. Davis, whose two children are on the team, brings many years of competitive swimming experience and great enthusiasm for the sport to her new role. “I am looking forward to being the coach of the Holmdel Hurricanes this year, and have only 2 goals for the swimmers – to have fun and to improve their swimming.  Swimming has been a part of my life since a very young age, and I really enjoy working with children with something that is so dear to my heart.”

On July 7, the Hurricanes will hold their annual Swim-a-thon to raise money for the American Cancer Society.  In prior years, the team has raised nearly five thousand dollars. They will swim many more laps this year in an effort to match that goal.

Registration for the swim team is still being accepted at the Holmdel Recreation Department for swimmers eleven years old and above only.
