Holmdel Hurricanes Swim For Good Cause
Annual Marathon to take place to raise money for the American Cancer Society.
On Thursday, July 7th the Holmdel Hurricanes Swim Team hope to come out winners. This time, however, they will not be trying to defeat the local swim team competition. They will be joining in the effort to defeat cancer. Working with the American Cancer Society, the swim team will hold its annual swim marathon. Team members, ages 5- 18, will swim laps to raise both awareness and funds for a cure for cancer.
Leading the way on this swim team tradition are two team members who also serve as volunteer coaches. High school juniors, Lois Marie Brooks and Kristen Watkins have been part of the marathon since they joined the team. Starting as participants, they have taken the reins in organizing the event for the past two years. “It’s a great for kids to have fun while raising money for a great cause,” says Watkins. Whether it’s one lap or one hundred laps, breast stroke or freestyle, all team members are encouraged to participate.

Last year, swim team members swam about 6300 laps, the equivalent of about ninety miles, and raised over $4000.00. Watkins is optimistic that the team can match their all-time high of $5000 this year, despite having a smaller team. Swimmers will solicit donations from friends and family members. Donors may contribute a flat fee or challenge a swimmer with a per lap donation.
Parents of the team members keep track of the laps completed and provide a well-deserved breakfast to the very hungry swimmers afterwards.
