New Traffic Pattern Observed For Four-Way Stop In Holmdel

HOLMDEL, NJ - A new four-way stop sign in Holmdel Township has changed the pattern of traffic at the crossroads of Telegraph Hill Road - Holland Road and South Holland Road - Takolusa Drive.

The Holmdel Township Committee unanimously approved an ordinance in October 2020 to add the extra safety measure.

Holmdel Township outlined the rules of four-way stops in the most recent edition of its monthly newsletter to residents:

The Four Rules of Four-Way Stops

1. First to arrive, first to go. The first car to pull up to the stop sign is the first car that gets to proceed.
2. The tie goes to the right. Sometimes two cars stop at the intersection at the exact same time, or at least close to the same time.
3. Straight before turns.
4. Right then left.

A public hearing on the ordinance was held on Oct. 13 to take final action on the traffic pattern changes. No comments from the public were made.

As initially reported by TAPinto Holmdel, the new signage comes three years after a Holmdel resident nearly lost his life due to a motor vehicle accident at the intersection. A since-defunct GoFundMe page for the local detailed that the accident left him with "multiple brain injuries.”

Last year, Township Engineer Ben Matlack noted that the four-way stop at the intersection "is warranted,” noting that the Holmdel Township Police Department has expressed interest in implementing a roundabout at the intersection.

"We're looking into that as well," he said at the meeting.

Main Street will also be closed to all vehicular traffic for about two weeks for a bridge replacement near Cross Road. The roadway will be closed for 24 hours a day.
