Former NFL offensive tackle Roman Oben visited the Hazlet Recreation Summer Camp on Thursday, July 5th.

Oben’s visit coincided with the camp’s Sports Day, the first of its weekly “Theme Thursday” dress-up days.

While the campers were engaged by the day’s special activities, including sports trivia and a dress-up contest, the highlight of their day was the time spent with Oben.

Roman Oben met with, talked to, and took pictures with all of the campers. He answered many of their questions and was a very big hit with both the boys and the girls.

The New York Giants drafted Mr. Oben out of the University of Louisville in the 3rd round of the 1996 NFL Draft. Oben spent four years with the Giants before going on to play for the Cleveland Browns, Tampa Bay Buccaneers, and San Diego Chargers. He played for the Buccaneers when they won the Super Bowl in 2002. He retired from the NFL after the 2007 season.

Roman Oben will be running a flag football camp in Hazlet on August 20, 21, and 22 from 9:00 am-12:30 pm.

Since 2003, he has successfully run and facilitated football camps around the country, helping thousands of young athletes learn the fundamentals of football, nutrition, sports safety, and overall fitness.

Oben’s camps offer fun, safe, and educational football experiences that are exclusively non-contact. In fact, he specializes in providing best-in-class, non-contact youth football clinics – as an official NFL PLAY 60 provider. NFL PLAY 60 is the league’s national youth health and fitness campaign; it encourages young fans to be active for at least sixty minutes every day.

Oben has testified in U.S. Congressional hearings on safety in youth sports. As a result of his dedication to youth, he was recognized as the San Diego Big Brothers/Big Sisters 2007 Man of the Year.
