The Asbury Park Press ranked #4 Holmdel Boys Varsity team hosted Shore Regional tonight at Roggy field and dominated virtually every aspect of the game. This was a non-divisional game and with the 5-1 win, the Hornets improved their record to 7-1(7-1-0; 5-1-0)
With about 7 minutes gone by, Menos Hiras got Holmdel on the board first with a score off a free kick. That was followed with goals by Jason Kyriacou and Gino D'Agostino, as Holmdel finished the first half with a 3-0 lead.
The second half was more of the same as Brendan Wall scored in the thirteen minute. Shore was able to connect on one, to make the score 4-1 and avoid a shutout. Senior captain Jack Flanagan added the final touch for Holmdel with 8 minutes remaining to cement the victory at 5-1.
The Boys play next at home in an A central divisional game against Raritan at 6 p.m. on Thursday at Roggy field. This is an important game against Hazlet's Raritan Rockets.
Holmdel High School hosted the HYAA kindergarten boys program tonight as about 50 of the young players competing on 8 different teams came onto the field at half time and participated in some exciting games under the lights. The HYAA boys had the thrill of having each of their names announced over the PA as they ran onto the field. Our young rec players and their families filled the bleachers and had a great time cheering on the Hornets.
Meanwhile, the APP ranked #4 Holmdel girls suffered their first loss of the season to #5 St. Rose. The first two thirds of the game were really quite exciting. St. Rose got off to a 2-0 lead. Jessica Moskal scored with 7 minutes remaining in the first half to make it 2-1. Holmdel came out and evened the score at 2 all about 10 minutes into the second half with a pass from Lizzie Zelina to Jessica Moskal. The score wasn't to be tied for long, as St. Rose added a third. But, Holmdel battled back and Gabby Bair connected on a text book perfect pass from Hannah Lee. Score tied again, now 3-3. For Holmdel fans, the game went downhill quickly from there. Perhaps the girls got tired, but St. Rose surged and quickly put up 3 more goals for a final score of 6-3. The score didn't tell the whole story here as it was an exciting and competitive game for 65 minutes. But a game is 80 minutes and St. Rose walked away with the victory and an end to the Girls' undefeated season.
This was a non-divisional loss and the Girls' Varsity record is still an impressive (7-1)(6-0). The girls will look to get back on track as they face Raritan at Raritan High School on Thursday at 6:30 p.m.
