The Holmdel Boys Soccer Season Comes to an end on PK's

In an ugly case of  deja vu from the Girls Varsity game yesterday, the Holmdel Boys Varsity Soccer team lost to Delran on penalty kicks.  It was a evenly played game.   The wind was a bit of a factor giving one team a slight advantage ( Delran the first half, Holmdel the second)  but not enough to allow either team to score.

The two teams battled through 100 scoreless and very cold minutes, 80 regulation and 20 overtime,  and into penalty kicks they went.  Holmdel is usually spot accurate in its pk's but today was not to be their day.  Holmdel was unable to convert on three shots and even though the Holmdel goalkeeper was able to save two, Delran converted on their fifth and final shot for the game winning goal.

Delran moves on to play Rumson in the Group II sectional finals in Rumson on Friday.  Sadly, it is the first time in four years that Holmdel will not be there.
The Holmdel Boys Varsity team has had a tremendous season and the entire community is very proud of them.  The Boys finish with a record of 16-2-3 and 11 shutouts.  The team graduates four seniors, Jack Flanagan, Connor Shields, Jason Kyriacou and Matt Swift, all of whom will be missed by their teammates and the fans.

The blog will be back next soccer season.  It was a pleasure watching these kids give their all every game and having them bring pride to the town of Holmdel.

Until then, please turn out and support Holmdel's athletes in their winter and spring seasons.  I will see you there.  Go Hornets.
