Truck Hits Laurel Ave. Bridge For 4th Time In 2 Years

For the fourth time in two years — but the first time in 2019! — a truck hit the Laurel Avenue overpass bridge in Holmdel on Wednesday.

HOLMDEL, NJ — For the fourth time in two years — but the first time in 2019! — a truck hit the Laurel Avenue overpass bridge in Holmdel on Wednesday.

At about 7:10 a.m. Wednesday morning, April 3, the Holmdel Police Department received reports that a tractor trailer struck the NJ Transit bridge on Laurel Avenue. Police said the truck was traveling southbound on Laurel Avenue from Hwy. 35 and the driver failed to observe numerous warning signs about the bridge clearance.

The truck became wedged under the bridge. The removal and clean-up closed Laurel Avenue southbound for approximately one hour.

Traffic in the area was heavily delayed. The crash investigation is being handled by the NJ Transit Police Department.

The Laurel Avenue bridge carries the North Jersey Coast line tracks. It has a a clearance of 12 feet, five inches.

All the incidents in the past two years:

July 13, 2018: A truck hit the bridge at 6 a.m. on Friday, July 13.

Monday, May 21, 2018: A tractor trailer traveling on Laurel Ave. struck the bridge. The trailer became wedged under the bridge and had to be removed by a heavy-duty towing company.

March 19, 2018: VIDEO: FedEx Truck Hits Bridge In Holmdel. A FedEx truck collided with the Laurel Avenue bridge, and a helicopter captured aerial footage of the damage. The impact was so great it shaved the roof off the truck and actually split the truck in two.

March 2, 2016: Truck Gets Wedged Under Laurel Avenue Bridge; the Newark-based female driver had an outstanding criminal warrant in that incident.
