Fall is approaching and so is the Great Striper fishing that happens as the weather cools. All your favorite hotspots will come alive as the weather starts to cool and the Stripers start their fall migration to our rivers. Let’s look at the past seasons and use them as an indicator of what’s to come this year. As we approach September the urge to migrate will start the natural instincts of Stripers to find sanctuary in rivers. This pattern will continue right to the early snows of winter. Clams, Eels, swimming plugs, top water plugs and metal will all take their share of fall Stripers. Surf rods in the Nine to twelve foot range loaded with 17 to 30 pound test line and a fluorocarbon leader of at least 30 pound test will get you in the game. For those who like to troll for Stripers the bigger slab sided trolling metals will take their share as will feathers and Plugs. Let’s check the rods and reels and load up with new line so when the weather breaks we are ready to fish.
Sandy Hook and the surrounding area are a good bet for both boat and shore fisherman. The jetties in nearby Long Branch and Deal as well as Asbury Park provide for some of the finest shore fishing in the entire world. The Shrewsbury rocks and the dump area are also good bets for the boat fisherman.
Get your fall chores done now so you can take advantage of the action as it starts and follow it through to the end of the season.
